We're blessed with a new coating of snow yesterday, to keep it looking like a winter wonderland and Christmas. We still need more snow in my book, before I would take one of my sleds out. But with that said, there are two sleds at Fastrac fueling up as I'm typing. As with anything...beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Hope you're ready for Christmas, only a few days till it's here.

There may not be enough snow to ride. But it sure does feel like Christmas again. The trees have snow sticking to them and no grass is showing. Then add in 2 below this morning and it feels and looks like a winter wonderland again. Long range forecast is showing some snow for the end of the week. But only time is going to tell on that one.

I guess fall is over or at least that's what it felt like this past week. But we are back to winter as of this morning and snow has returned to Old Forge.
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THIS MORNING TO 7 AM EST SUNDAY... * WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches. The highest totals will be over the southwest Adirondacks, extreme northwest Saratoga County and portions of Washington County.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snowfall rates will approach an inch an hour late this afternoon into the early evening. Sleet may mix in at times late this afternoon into early this evening across the Mohawk Valley and northern portions of the Capital Region, including central and southern Saratoga County.
If it keeps snowing like it's been for the last few hours, till 7am Sunday morning. We'll have a foot plus of good packing snow on the ground. If some sleet does mix in, all the better. It will pack down that better and add up faster.

You'll see in the video that there was a good turnout at the Rec. Center today. It is sad that we lost what snow we did have. Not that it was really enough to ride. But I think having that light layer of snow has an effect on people and helps with the Christmas spirit. A spirit they will take back home.
It's 6:56PM and the cold front is hitting our area. The wind has picked up and it's pouring. My weather station is showing constant 20 plus and one gust was 48MPH.

I saw the first sleds of the season on the webcam at the rec. center today. There is a thin ice base, with a few inches of snow on top. But not enough for me to fire up my sled just yet. Forecast isn't looking all that great and I'm hoping we don't lose what we got.

The 32nd annual New York Shootout will take place for its 6th year on Chip & Cindy Sauer’s Track behind The Ole Barn in Inlet, NY on Saturday, December 11th. The gates will open at 9:00 a.m. and the racing will begin at 11:00 a.m. Spectator fee is $10.
The event will be hosting 3 snowmobile manufacturers: Cook’s Recreation (Arctic Cat) of Tully, NY, Arctic Adventures (Ski-Doo) of Rosendale, NY, Kebecka’s Polaris (Polaris) as well as performance shop modified runs and trail riders runs. Trail riders can run 660' for $10.
Product sponsors include Woody’s and there will be a live remote by The Moose of Boonville. Food trucks on site will be Squishy’s BBQ & Catering (Lowville, NY) & City Dawgz of NNY (Watertown, NY), beer by Screamen Eagle (Inlet, NY) and other vendors including Death by Chili Sauce (Rochester, NY) & Tug Life (Lowville, NY). Lake effect is in the area now and local forecast has it moving south overnight and back north tomorrow. The wind has also picked up over the last few hours.

It's 6:11PM and the R has changed back to snow. We took a good hit from the R. Virgin snow pretty much was gone. But anything that was packed down and frozen stuck around.
Have R coming out of the sky this morning and it's in the forties. But the worst is to come this afternoon.

Hoping everyone had a safe and Happy Thanksgiving Day! We had a nice day here in the north country and this weekend is Christmas on Main here in Old Forge. Town will be busy and it won't be long before the trails are open for another season of riding.
Got the trail cam back online. All I can say is computers are your friend and window also.
The live cam is back online. One of the cables to the camera was acting a little funny. It's been replaced and I'm hoping that will do the trick.

The SnowCam is back for the winter season. We had snow Wednesday and Stillwater had snow over night. Great thing about lake effect. You never know who is going to get it. I'm planning on going to McCauley this afternoon and see why the trail cam isn't connecting.

Well it stuck to the grass but not to the roads. I'd say we got about two inches tops. But it was melted off by noon.

We started the month of April with snow and we're going to end it the same way. How much I can't say, but it doesn't look like more than a dusting

These three spots are the last of the snow on the property. One from the place I pile the snow up plowing and the other two are from me plowing and the snow off of the roof from next door. But it may not be the last snow we see. There are still some snow flakes in the upcoming forecast for us.

I took a ride out to the end of North Street yesterday and by what I saw. I would guess that some of the inner trails my even be toast also. If there is anything left out there it won't be for long. Because starting Saturday the day time temps are all in the 40's and 50's for ten days.

Take note of the snow on the railing at Stillwater on Sunday. The side of the railing is not covered with snow and the melt down of the snow is much faster than it is in the parking lot. But as soon as a dark spot shows up in the lot, the melt down starts picking up speed there also.

Had a dusting of snow overnight, which made it look all fresh and pretty this morning. But it was short lived, as the sun cooked it off in no time and then it was back to the dirty snow.

I didn't take a ride out to north street today, to see what it's looking like. But by what I saw here at the motel, I'd guess that it isn't pretty out there. There are a few spots in the front yard that the grass is starting to show and the parking lot is bare in some spots. I put a snow fix in at the end of the video for you.

Not to be mister doom and gloom. But it doesn't look all that promising for things to come back around before they close the gates. There is some snow in the forecast, but it doesn't look like enough to make a difference. I'm surprised no one has said anything about what is missing in the video. I'm hoping today wasn't the last of the season. But just in case it was, I went out for a short ride this afternoon. Overall the conditions today where good. But with what I saw today, I don't think they will be all that great after two or three days of warmth and some R one day. Just hope we get some new snow after the warm up or today just may have been my last ride of the season.

It's pretty quiet around town this Sunday evening and nothing like it's been the last month. Not much else to report. Cross your fingers the mid week warm up doesn't hurt us to bad and we get some snow back in here to finish off the season till the end of the month.

The cold temps over the weekend helped keep the trails frozen down, which was a big plus with the amount of traffic they saw. The forecast for mid week isn't looking all that great. But by Friday night we should be back to winter. So next weekend may be a bust, but after that there is still two weeks before it's over and the gates swing shut for the season.

The video today shows what went on Wednesday and Thursday. Trails are in great shape and the cold temps this weekend will help keep things together. The Pink Ribbon Riders event will be in town this weekend. I'm guessing they will be having trail rides, so keep an eye out for them. Hope you have plans to get some seat time in. The cold temps have returned and the soft trail conditions from the warmth and R on Sunday and Monday are gone. Groomers are out and the snow we received was enough to cover the ice in spots. So here is Tuesday video on Wednesday morning.

Cross your fingers that the cold temps tonight freeze the lakes back up. Because it looks like Stillwater has some slush on it. I know the parking lot got soft in a few spots over the last few days, so it goes to figure the lakes got soft also. We haven't seen much snow from the lake effect this evening, but at 10pm that all started to change. How long will it last? You never know with lake effect. But we have gotten enough to make a change in the conditions, enough to cover the iced over spots. Here's a pic at the info center. But on the other hand we don't want to much or the lakes may not freeze back up.

We saw some light R late in the afternoon on Sunday. The warmer temps and the R that we did see over the last few days did put a hurting on the roads. But colder temps are returning and with some new snow in the forecast for Monday the trails should be in pretty good shape. It's that time of the year, spring time conditions are here.

We had some light R today. But nothing that I would call a wash out. You may have gotten a little wet. But it wasn't anything that washed out the trails or anything like that. Take a look at the long range forecast and think about if you want to get another ride in this year. Because there may be some ugly headed our way after next weekend.

March is only a few days away and with it comes a hotter sun. Today you could really feel the heat of the sun on your back when you went outside. So get as much seat time in as you can. Because who knows when it will come to an end. Last year the first weekend in March was the end of the season for us.

We did have some R over night. But it wasn't anything to get upset about. This morning a cold front came through and gave us an inch or so of snow. It may not come true, but after looking at the super long range forecast. You may want to get in as much seat time as you can. Because four days of temps in the high 30's can't be good for conditions.

It's been a good run and I hate to say it, but we are getting to that time of the year when the weather doesn't always go the way we want it to. Looks like a spike on Saturday and I'm hoping if it does happen, it holds off till later in the day.

Went out for a short ride this afternoon and over all the trails are in good shape. Did 50 miles in about two hours. Went south on 6 then back north on the tracks. Tracks could have been better than we just looped around up to Big Moose and back to Old Forge. 29 still wasn't great and we turned around.

Had snow most of the day and we picked up another 4 to 6 inches. It looks like the amount of people in the area is going to be lighter this week, by what I saw today. So riding conditions this week should be at peak. You'll see what I'm talking about in today's video.

Ten day forecast only has one day that we'll see the sun and that day the predicted high will be 27. So the few days that the temp is predicted to go above freezing won't be as bad. 38 and cloudy compared to 38 and sunny makes a big difference in the damage done to conditions.

The number of people looking at the blog Saturday are down, which is a good thing. That means they are out and about and I hope getting in some seat time. Because it doesn't get much better than it is and who knows how long it will stick around.

Went out for a short ride tonight. Overall the trails are in pretty good shape. The only one I wouldn't have taken again was Sheldrick Run. It's always a hit or miss trail and tonight I should have missed it. Put on a quick 47 miles and saw more sleds than normal for a Thursday night.

Finished shoveling the roofs today. Now the thousand dollar question is, will there be a second time? We still have a week and a half in February and all of March to go. Wouldn't be the first time I had to do it twice in one winter. Noticed today that the snow stick is still hanging in at the two foot mark. Yesterday's warmth and R settled the snow down a lot. When I was shoveling I noticed that it also packed the snow down from Monday.

Well we didn't see as much as was predicted. But what we did get, will help us out in the long term. I am glad that I shoveled most the roofs and will be finishing them Wednesday. It wasn't in the forecast, but we did have some R today and the weight of the snow has increased a lot. Also after today's weather, the base on the trails will be holding together a lot better.

Did another section of the motel roof today. There was two plus feet on this section also. Which would be OK, but with another two feet predicted over the next ten days. Now you're talking four feet and starting to push your luck. It's not in the forecast, but all you would need then is some R and things could get ugly fast.

There have been flurries in the air all morning. At noon it has increased to the point that I can say it's snowing. I'll keep you updated on how things are going.
To tell you the truth I didn't think it was that deep. Started shoveling roofs today and there was an easy two feet up there. Looks like it's a good thing I started on them. Because if we get the snow that is in the 10 day forecast, there will be another two up there in 10 days.

Crazy Friday morning and I forgot to video the parking lot this morning. The upcoming week looks like it's going to be interesting when it comes to snow totals. Not that I really want to, but I think I'm going to start shoveling the motel roofs Saturday, in case we do get the predicted snow. Because if we do, they would have close to three feet on them.

I'm sure many of you know about this, but for those of you that don't. It's called Polaris Ride Command and it's a free map app that shows you where snowmobile trails are.

I got my laugh for the day, when putting together today's video. It's something we all have done. Do you see what it is? Conditions are good and just keep getting better. Went to Stillwater to fix the camera and was very pleased with the conditions. With conditions as good as they are, most people are taking longer rides, so I didn't pass many sleds on the way up and back.

Tuesday afternoon I started the fun job of shoveling off roofs. The one you can see in the video is the sled shed roof. I also did two other sheds and two roofs out back. It won't be much longer and I'll be up on the motel roof, with the way it's been snowing around here.

Over the last few days I started doing something around here. You'll notice it in the video of the parking lot each morning. What have I been up to? Thinking about what to report on and all you have to say is. Forecast looks good, over a foot of base, groomers are out, trail conditions are good and you couldn't ask for better temps. Guess this fits the definition of, life is good if you're a snowmobiler.

With the storm bringing snow to most of the north east, will the increased traffic let up some in the Old Forge area? Something that has been a bonus, from the larger area of snow coverage, is being able to make loop rides outside of the normal lake effect snow band areas.

We're going to see some snow from the storm, but nothing like some have. Winter weather advisory is calling for up to 6 inches by Tuesday night. But that's OK by me. We don't need to see a two foot dump, on top of the two feet we already have on the ground. That would put us into roof shoveling season for sure.

Riding conditions are good and the temps this weekend had a lot to do with it. 11 below this morning and our high was 10. So everything stayed frozen down and the trails held up well with the high sled traffic we had this weekend.

If you're a regular Old Forge rider and you have thoughts of coming up this winter, you need to get a reservation in at your normal place you stay. Because with other areas not having good snow this season, we are seeing a lot of new people to the area. It's never fun when you have to tell a good returning guest that you don't have room for them. On another note what did I mess up in this video?

Just watched the local 11pm news and they are calling for Old Forge to bottom out at 12 below tonight. I cleared the weather station and I'll let you know tomorrow what it drops to. We had light snow most of the afternoon, not anything that amounted to much. Trails should hold up well this weekend, with the cold temps we'll be having here in the north country.

Storm front came in late morning and by 1pm we starting seeing snow. Not a big snow maker when it came to inches, but a good storm when it came to everyone getting it. Made it better for taking loop rides and not having to stay where the lake effect bands gave us snow.

I think Monday morning is going to be the coldest one we've had this season so far. Forecast is saying -2, but I'm predicting more like 10 to 15 below. We had sun today and believe it or not, that can be a good thing in some ways. It isn't good for keeping the roads covered. But it can be good for the trails, it softens them up during the day and then they freeze down at night making for a better base. Not much else to report on, besides winter is here and I hope you're getting a chance to enjoy it.

The number of times people looked at the blog was way down on Saturday. So I hope it's because, you got a chance to get out and ride some with all the new snow the area has seen this past week. Traffic was very heavy Saturday, but I think the colder temps helped keep things frozen down and the trails held up better the the high traffic level.

We had lake effect today again and added another inch or two to the snow total for the week. Looks like another 4 to 6 on Thursday and Friday. Which is OK by me, let's stock pile some snow. Never hurts to have a extra foot or two on the ground, just in case you need it. It also makes live so much easier on the groomers, when they don't have to worry about clipping something with the mogul master.

The storm dropped 6 plus inches of heavy wet snow that has turned things around overnight. This evening the lake effect snow machine is starting to fire up and it looks like another 4 to 8 from that. So conditions are good and it's time to get out there an start enjoying winter. Today's video pretty much says it all, hope you enjoy it.

Five inches of great packing snow and still snowing. Conditions have gone from marginal to fair over night and if it keeps snowing like this all day, we will have good conditions by this evening. You couldn't ask for better snow than we are getting today. Then through in some lake effect after this storm front passes. More later, I'm going out to plow.
The 2021 snowmobile season may be getting started this weekend, if we get the snow that is in the forecast. You'll see in the video that there have been a few sleds around town, but nothing like it should be for the second week of January. By what I'm seeing, the snow we will be getting will improve conditions very fast, as it will be snow from a storm and not lake effect.
Just watched the 11pm news and weather. Local forecast is calling for 5 to 8 from the storm, with lake effect to follow. Who knows, with it being a holiday weekend, we may just pull off a two day weekend of riding yet. Just not the norm of Friday and Saturday, but Saturday and Sunday for those who have it off.

WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING...
* WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of greater than 7 inches possible. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph Saturday morning into the evening. * WHERE...Northern Herkimer, Hamilton, Northern Warren and Northern Fulton Counties.
Forecast is still holding, with snow 8 out of 10 days. The thousand dollar question is, will we get it? No big number snow falls, which can be a good thing. Light snow all day, could mean the roads don't get plowed and they just pack down. Went out to north street and took a walk out onto trail 1 to see how it was looking. Could see solid ice base, where someone spun their track, with an inch or two of cover. How thick the base was I can't say for sure, but I would guess it isn't all that thick. Saying sled traffic the last few days has been light, is an under statement. Not much else to report and keep your fingers crossed the forecast comes true.

Can you believe it, it's snowing. Doesn't look like it's going to amount to much, but at least it's a start. Everything is frozen down, all we need is 6 inches to make it rideable. It won't be great, but better than anything we've had so far this season.
The long range forecast is now showing some numbers with the snow showers. Nothing to get all crazy about, but at least enough that we may start to get some riding in for the season if it comes true. I'm also liking some of the wind directions I'm seeing, that may also bring us some lake effect. But that you never know till it happens. Nothing much else to report. Hasn't been much to report on. Had a few people come up and give it a try the beginning of the week. They all said the same thing. Wasn't sorry they did it and only saw a few other people out there. Conditions aren't anything to talk about and if there was any kind of traffic at all, the little snow that is out there wouldn't last long. So I guess that goes along with the town report of VERY MARGINAL conditions.

Things have frozen back down after the early Saturday morning R and we have gotten a heavy dusting to an inch of new snow late Sunday afternoon into the evening. I've been saying that it's quiet around town the last few days. Well with the R we had over night, turning everything into mashed potatoes this morning, it got even quieter today. It's 8:30 at night and there is only one car in Fastrac's parking lot and not a sled to be heard or seen. I'm just hoping that the few that did go out riding today, didn't mess things up to much. Because the temps are dropping into the teens tonight and the trails will be freezing in however they left them.

Hope everyone had a nice New Years Day and are safe and heathy. It was a very quiet holiday here in the north country this year. So quiet, one of the guests we have in, asked if it is always like this. I told them no, between lack of snow and covid it's been a slow winter season so far. I'm just hoping that Saturday morning we don't see to much R and it's more snow than anything. So cross your fingers and put in a few extra dance steps.
