and come back some spring time day! What the heck, it can't hurt. So far we haven't seen any R today, but it looks like it is to the south of us down around Utica at 6:30pm. Traffic has been light, because I think just about everyone headed for home, thinking today was going to be a wash. But the few guests that stayed around got in a good day of riding. The next 24 hours are going to be the classic wait and see, as far as the weather goes. Because I have seen this many times before and it goes one of two ways. One we get a really good dumping of heavy wet snow as the cold front comes in or two, don't ask...trust me. And for those of you that think it's over for the season, you just keep thinking that. Because those of us that have been riding Old Forge for a long time know it's not. Sorry this was so late today. The DSL was down all afternoon and I got behind in things.
Today's Video for..............
Thanks for the updates Steve. Yes a razors edge and roller coaster ride for sure but we should make it through OK. Timing is key and upper level cold front will push through by 1 am Thurs with temps dropping by Thurs morning below freezing. Wrap around snow bands with potential for 3-4" on the ground by Thurs night!! The 4" we grabbed last night will melt off but lets just consider that the sacrificial lamb and protector of the base :) My plans are to ride this weekend and the pattern we will be in will be typical 1-2" shots off the lake on Fri/Sat & Sun. If we are really lucky the weather models are picking up some action for around Tues next week. Again thanks for the blog, updates and cams and dance away
ReplyDeleteholly cow look out the window now 39 & starting to rain!if you know so much about the weather do you have a jet ski for this weekend? only kidding. it don't look so good!
DeleteRochester rained hard all after noon
Deletegreen grass everywhere
makes OF look great
@ 8:58 yes I am aware that it is raining. Temps at 39 but it is a cold rain and this event will be short lived. As stated timing is key and the mixing (upper warm layer down to the ground is showing signs of weakening), meaning the shot of 50+ degrees predicted by the various canned weather reports is fading and mid 40's is more likely for the 12 hours we will be in the really warm sector. No jet ski but I am willing to wager that by Friday I will ride and the conditions will be better than those we saw after the meltdown two weeks ago. Want to wager say a beer at the Winter Boat Friday night in RL? If no ride drink of your choice in OF.
Deleteaccuweather is forecasting 1-2 inches of RAIN. 45deg. 1-3 inches snow for thurs night. Trails are done. WE need at least a foot for descent riding. Not being negative, this is the way it is.
DeleteAll this advanced talk about weather is making me wanna ride. I think you'll be riding Friday too!!!
DeleteThat's a very well thought out statement Pinkydoo. Now let's hope things don't get to bad, I'd prefer not to use the delete option.
Deletepinkypoo heard danica was was up too last weekend.did you get spend any time with her?
Deleteso nice to wake up to slush and snirt on the cams. Big wash out again!!! The next bone head that says "this year is already better than last year" is gonna get a visit from my foot!!!

ReplyDeletei see sand on the beach. Not a good sighn, rain hasnt even started yet.
ReplyDelete1 2 inches a night will not fill in 6 inch mud holes at 32 degrees.web cams always make it look alot better than it realy is!.you should be here and see the real mess.this place looks like a sewer again!2 inches will only cover the slop again!
DeleteYeah..If we had a 2 foot lake effect on our doorstep that would be great but that's not happening...One bad day like this can trash the entire area...Un freakin real!!!!!
ReplyDeleteso not worth it anymore...
Lets see what happens. Things change on a dime.
ReplyDelete"WOW" Look at the rec center webcam, down to the dirt, trail cam looks like a paved road. Season is not over, but not looking good. Winters are not what they use to be.
ReplyDeletemaybe old forge should start thinking about putting in a huge snowmaking system. They have the water supply, all they need is a nuclear powerplant.
ReplyDeleteFLASH FLOOH WARNING, TERENTIAL DOWNPOURS, STRONG THUNDERSTORMS, 2-3 INCHES OF RAIN.... DONE
ReplyDeletetotal junk !!!!!
ReplyDeleteSteve, Its time for the pool cam, have a great day
ReplyDeleteRain WILL kill.it. truth is old forge WAS the snowmobile capital of the NE. Its a has been place. When there is a bit of snow the trails r beat to crap anyway.

ReplyDeleteFeb? LOL The season is coming to a close then. What a laugh. You guys really need to face reality. No more sledding in the north east. Its a joke at best.
DeleteNWS calls for cold temps through Feb.for the northeast. Witch means snow and no more melt-downs.The glass is half full.If you want to be negative I'll just talk to my exwife!!!!
DeleteDidn't your Mom teach you to be positive? There are a lot of kids on here skipping school today. Come on, grow up.
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! Look at the weather underground on Steve's Snow Cam page. He says it's usually the most accurate forecast for the area. It has snow showers & chance of snow Thurs., Fri., Sat., Sun., Mon., Tues. & Wed. We will all be on our sleds & smiling again soon!!!!
ReplyDeleteReport from the town as of 9:30 4 inches of packed snow on a 4 inch frozen base fair conditions!!!! WTF are they out of there F#@#@#G minds?????
ReplyDeletedon't you know by now the bs flying around here? we lost about 6 inches already of the foot we had left!& its raining at 51 degrees.the only thing thats true is we had about 66 inches snow & 68 inches of sand & salt.HERE COMES THE BLOG!HOPE STEVE IS OUT PLOWING THE WATER OF HIS YARD SO THIS BLOB WILL LAST AWHILE.
DeleteI'll let it up just so you can feel good about it. However the only truth I see in this post is about the 6" we lost and the 51 with R. Don't know about the 66" of snow and the 68" of sand I know is a little off.
Deletethanks steve it does make me feel good.at least you can joke about it what a mess! hope it turns around for you and the other places around town!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DeleteI miss hearing from Rose, she must be out riding, or lost on uncas road
ReplyDeleteI miss hearing from crazy Dan on Rondaxe. He must be sitting up there playing with his shotgun.
ReplyDeleteThose trails look like my underware!

Deletebest bolg of the year so far. how true but don't show me them call pinkypoo she takes care of this problem all the time!!
DeleteSteve,
ReplyDeleteHate to break it to you - Old Forge is warmer than......here in Dallas, TX today!
Hi Jeff,
DeleteMaybe there is some truth in the weather patterns flipping.
Looking forward.. When the conditions are there.. Use it or lose it.
ReplyDeleteWe had probably 3 Seasons of weather in the last 10 days.!
I just saw a sled out on North st. Are you kidding me? Gotta be ruff on the trails and his equipment!
ReplyDeleteTaking a look at the weather forecast. a few inches here and there in the forecast...cripes....need a few feet !!!!
ReplyDeleteLook at the trail cams. Snow is gone. Maybe, and I mean a BIG maybe, we will have some snow next year. This year is a wash.
ReplyDeleteReally no snow in site in the 10 day forecast. You guys thought last year was bad? This year is worse. Each year it gets worse and worse. Soon there will be zero riding in old forge. Sell your sleds now before its too late.
ReplyDeleteyeah my point from before..this year blows !!!
ReplyDeleteYeah "ride when it's here"...like that's a reality...5 hours away with a business here to run. Seems like I can never plan anything up there for fear of "the big washaway"...it's no better anywhere else either...sucks!!!
15 inches of snow possible through next tuesday..(cumulative total)...It's shot for 2 weeks!!!
ReplyDeletekeep dreaming pal. You guys in denial keep pulling forecasts out of your ass's cause there is MAYBE a few inches of snow in the next week or so. 15 inches for the rest of the year maybe.
Delete4:23 Glad you can see into your crystal ball. Can you tell me if I'm going to marry a rich man & live happily ever after????
Deletedont see the need to diss 423 because those who know, KNOW that cant forecats much beyond 48hrs. and even then u gottwa wait till it starts Imve been studying weather reports for years u just never know... so ur right in blasting those who think the extended forecast isnt gonna happen but then again u could be wrong to.. 48-24hrs prior is ur best bet for what will or will not fall. Keep it real bro.. Ride on ride safe.. How has this affected the lakes steve?? seriously..
DeleteWell this does not make me happy!!!! Planned a nice 4 day mid week ride for next week - thank you "mother nature" you absolutely, completely suck!!!!!! Sad Face :(
ReplyDeleteCan't even go further north. Rain and crappy trails as far north as Maine. Sorry
ReplyDeleteeverybody see this? Cant even ride as far north and east as maine. what about canada?? seee global warming isnt the issue its weather patterns. They cycle.. Soooooooooo u cant bash the Forge its an everywhere problem... Tho the GORE concept is equally wrong..
DeleteJan 30, 2013 and at 5:00pm were at 61 degrees..report from the town...up to a 1/4 inch of stones and cinders. Report from the trails...wasted....Forecast::: Junk!!!
ReplyDeleteand remember..... c ya
and remember global warming could bring an equally BAD snow storm weather patterns change and are cyclical... I agree with the cinders and sand tho
DeleteInstead of sitting home and whining and wishing for snow.. go seek it! We just got back from a 4 day trip to Colorado. Rode Rabbit Ears Pass and the Grand Mesa, smoothest trails we have ever rode with a 36 inch base. They are getting hammered now with snow and expect another 33 inches when its over. The area offers some great trail and off trail riding. Off trail you can find hood deep snow practically anywhere. The views are spectacular and the people are very nice and helpful. The trip if you do some research is very affordable.. most likely just as much as many of you spend in OF in a single weekend. We rented a 2012 Dodge crew cab diesel with a 4 place trailer and 2012 Arctic Cat M800's and stayed in a cabin. If your itching that bad to ride.. give it a shot. We enjoyed the trip so much we are heading back beginning of March!
