Old Forge, Ny Snowmobile Trail Report

What a winter!! I don't want to sound like doom and gloom with my report. I just want everyone to understand that you are locked into trail riding and if you are planning on road riding, don't. I have had two different groups just come in and tell me the trails are good. Well let me take part of that back, they said trail 5 isn't good, go figure. Both groups also told me they say the groomers out.

Here's today's video........

  1. Trails look good from that video! Ride it while we got it.....
Hey, has anyone heard if the Brantingham trail that cuts off of 1 near stillwater road is any good? And if so, how is it from the junction to Brantingham?

  2. I had to pick my sled up this morning a big moose and rode trail 5 back to od forge and it was not the worse if seen it. But after I got back to the campground and had lunch we decided to take a ride and see what the rest of the trail where like. To our surprise we made it to Stillwater with no problem and only a few icy spots overall for the winter we have had the trails are holding up really well. Plan on leaving early tomorrow to see where we can get.
P.S. we put the snow scratchers on our sleds and no problem with overheating even on my 4 stroke. Steve keep up the great reports

  5. Has anyone rode from Trail 5 to Inlet to Matt's FX to Moose River Plains at all? Any comments on trail conditions for any of it?

  6. Just take 5, into eagle bay, get on the lake at Clarks, pop up onto 5 through inlet take a left on that first back street on south shore rd and pop out by the firehall, stay on trail to the right of the firehall, which ties into all those back trails in inlet, which is a better way of getting to the plains when roads are gone.

  7. I have wanted to get these comments up for a couple of weeks, and Steve has touched on some of the same things I wanted to address. Like Steve I own a business in Old Forge. Some of the comments going back a week or so attributed to business owners don't ring true. On the outside chance a owner here spoke that way they would certainly be a minority and pretty short sighted. Like Steve said summer is the big season and that is primarily due to summer visits being fairly steady all week and winters season is pretty much weekends (some long). I also would guess that this year is very tough on the Stillwater/Beaver River area, especially Beaver River as they do not get the summer traffic of other areas. A simple math lesson for those who think we would rather drain the pipes or don't care about the one day (we know it's more) a week snowmobilers spend money. Anyone new enough to a business in Old Forge to have a mortgage bought that business based on its value which in part is determined by income. That income included winters better than this one. Winter income is important to more businesses than you may think. To think we don't care about snowmobilers is a joke. Besides it's a lot more fun to have people around that have been out enjoying a ride rather than listen to the wind blow through the tress or play computer games. Now, someone like Steve who has been around a long time probably can ride out a bad winter better than some. He probably has had to drop down to sirloin from filet mignon while the rest of us are chowing hot dogs with spam starting to look good.

That said I would guess some or all of the comments that may have ruffled the feathers of some of our winter guest are just some cranky guy that didn't take a chance on the conditions and wants to spread the misery by stirring the pot. Maybe next I'll take a stab at (comments) the roads and Casey.

  9. We tried to take the Matts FX trial towards Moose River and had to turn around but we the trail to Christys Red Dog and made it there with just a couple rough spots. This was Sat so i'm sure it's worse.
