Lake Effect Snow Warning and Wind Advisory

 LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 1 AM MONDAY TO 6 AM EST WEDNESDAY.

* WHAT...Heavy lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations
between 8 and 16 inches. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph.

* WHERE...Montgomery, Northern Herkimer, and Southern Herkimer
Counties.

This all sounds great if it was the beginning of the season and we needed snow.  In the woods we have two to three feet plus and in the last 24 hours we had a good 4 inches of sleet.  Which is going to pack down like concrete.  The problem I'm seeing with this forecast is downed trees and the work it will take to get the trails back open.  Old Forge will be on top of it, but it will take time with all the snow on the ground.  Other areas are clubs and it may take them even longer to get things cleared up.  It's also no fun trying to turn around, when the snow is this deep, if you encounter a downed tree.  Not what you want to see on the biggest week of the snowmobile season.  Cross your fingers that it all turns out OK.

Winds gusting as high as 35 mph. For the Winter Storm Watch, heavy
lake effect snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 7 or more
inches possible. Winds could gust as high as 60 mph.

* WHERE...Northern Herkimer and Southern Herkimer Counties.

As I said yesterday it's going to be an interesting weekend.  Heavy traffic with it being a holiday weekend and then figure in a good dumping of snow.  The groomers are going to have their work cut out for them.  Be safe this weekend as you'll see a lot of younger riders on the trails.

* WHAT...Wintry mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet
accumulations range from a coating up to two inches, with two to
four inches across the southern Adirondacks and in southern
Vermont. Ice accumulations of a coating up to two tenths of an
inch of flat ice. Wind gusts up to 30 to 40mph.

When conditions get like this there isn't much to report besides you're missing out if you aren't here.  I really struggled with coming back tonight to do a video or just stay out and ride more.  Video won out.

* WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 6 and
11 inches and ice accumulations a light glaze for areas well south
of Albany. Highest snowfall amounts from around I-90 north.

* WHERE...Portions of northwestern Connecticut, western Massachusetts, 
eastern New York, and southern Vermont. 

It started snowing here around 7pm as predicted.  So, we'll have to see what we get from this storm.  Shoveled the house out back and the motel house roof today.  We'll start on the main motel roofs next week.  Then it's time to bring in the big snowblower.  Sorry I forgot to include the radar, snow cover and 48 hour maps in the video.

* WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations 7 or more
inches possible.

* WHERE...Portions eastern New York including the southwest
Adirondacks, Mohawk Valley, Lake George northern Saratoga Region,
Washington County and southern Vermont.

Took a ride up to Stillwater tonight, had the hot roast beef sandwich with fries.   I was shocked on how good the riding was with it being Friday night and a boat load of people already in town for the weekend.  Funny how two feet plus of snow will make grooming so much more effective.

Had some freezing drizzle today.  Nothing that is going to mess things up.  I'm thinking it will make things better.  It crusted over on the snow we have so it should improve the base even more.

This could be a good addition to the base we already have. When it comes to snow we are having an old time winter.  But one saving grace is we aren't having the temps that I've seen over the years.  I don't care how good your suit is.  At 20 below it's down right cold.

Hot turkey was the pick tonight...............

 Went out for a short ride tonight and had the open hot turkey with mashed potatoes at Stillwater.  Trails are at peak condition and the sticking snow in the trees is something to see.  Wednesday is going to be breath taking with the sun being out.  The high is going to be 15, so the sun may hurt the roads some, but the trails will hold up just fine.

Had to be done...............

 I started shoveling some of the roofs today.  The garage roof had a good three feet on the east side of it and with some possible R in the forecast it needed to come off.  The back side of the motel also gets deeper sooner.  I took off the top layer to equal out the load from front to back.

Office is quiet...........

An indicator that the riding is pretty good is when you don't have many guests coming into the office.  Forecast has a few days this week that look a little iffy.  Hopefully they'll change to all snow.

This is going to be the fourth good weekend in a row.  Old Man Winter sure has taken a liking to the north country this season so far.  Let's cross our finger it keeps going this way.  I did go out for a ride this evening and you had to go looking for a trail that wasn't too nice.

Not a bad day.................

 Tony and I went out for a ride this afternoon and knocked of 130 miles.  Did some trail breaking on the RR tracks and just had a great day of riding.  I may just go out riding tomorrow again conditions are so good.  Who can tell me what I messed up in today's video? Also forgot to put in video.  Beaver River groomed down to Big Moose Station.  We got off there, so I don't know if they headed further south.

There was 6" plus on the deck this morning and we could get another 2" by 1am.  By what I saw on the radar, Brantingham should have also gotten a good shot of snow from this lake effect event.  Which is a good thing, as many have said it was a little thin over there.

We had a steady flow of trailers heading into town today.  Temps will help hold things together for the weekend.  Still calling for snow most of next week.

Not to be a jerk, but it wasn't too long ago that this was normal temps for us all the time.  We would go a week or more and not get above zero without a wind hill.  The last few weeks haven't been like the old days, but it sure beats last January for sure.  On another note, no one has picked up on what is different about the new chair lift.  I'll give you a hint.  You have to look pretty close to notice it.

Getting better by the day..............

 Groomers are out in force tonight and the cold temps are setting up the trails for a great week of riding.  Went up to Stillwater tonight and main trails are groomed and in great shape.  The less traveled trails still needed some work.  Talked with one of the groomers and he planned on hitting some of the less traveled trails tonight.

 This past week was a little crazy with everyone wanting to get in some seat time.  For many it was their first seat time of the season.  This upcoming week doesn't look like it is going to be as crazy. So those that will be in the area should enjoy some great trail conditions.

 The chair lift at McCauley had its grand opening this morning at 10am.  Who can tell me what's different about this lift compared to the old one?  More info on the detour trail in the video.

 If you're planning on going to Brantingham, there is a detour this year again.  The detour this year is a lot better than it was a few years ago. It's my understanding Brantingham is grooming the trail all the way out to Stillwater Road.  I have the details on the detour in the video.

The numbers don't lie................

 You can tell by the number of sleds at Stillwater parking lot and I can tell by the number of people looking at the blog and cameras.  There are a lot of people out riding this weekend for sure.  For those of you that didn't get out to ride.  You'll have to get your fix with today's video.

 Pay attention to Stillwater at 10:54am.  That's when the first sled went out on to the reservoir this season and it wasn't long before there was a lot of tracks out there.  It also looks like there are tracks on 4th lake at the boat ramp.

 The more I thought about it, I think I'm wrong when I talked about the bridge at trail 8.  I said that it was for the railroad.  The railroad would have cut off at Carter Station and went out trail 9 to trail 5 to Eagle Bay.

Coming together.....................

 From a forecast that was OK to a forecast that is looking pretty darn good.  Cold temps every day in the 10 day and snow on 5 of them.  With clouds 7 days and mostly cloudy the rest.  Yes, it's nice to enjoy a day of riding when it's sunny, nothing prettier.  But we aren't to the point that we can lose any snow to the sun.

Went out............

 I did go out for a ride last night and zipped off 38 miles.  Stayed around the Old Forge area and traffic was very light for a Saturday night.  We did get lake effect the last 24 hours and that has improved trail condition a lot.  Groomers are out and with the cold temps the base will be setting up nice.

 LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 PM EST SUNDAY...

* WHAT...Heavy lake effect snow expected. Snow accumulations between
6 and 12 inches with locally higher amounts in the most persistent
bands. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph will result in blowing and
drifting snow.

* WHERE...Northern Herkimer County. The greatest snowfall amounts
are expected to occur near the Route 8 corridor.

* WHEN...Until 4 PM EST Sunday.

One thing is for sure this upcoming week.  We aren't going to see any melt downs unless the forecast really changes.  So, all the wet spots will be going away.  Cross your fingers the lake effect gives us a good amount of snow overnight and more this upcoming week.

 The lake effect has been south of use for the most part.  We did see some snow from it, but nothing to write home about.  But don't count it out just yet.  Lake effect warning is in effect till 4pm Saturday.  As long as there is snow coming off the lake the winds can change to our favor.  It may be a long shot, but one can hope.
