Hey Steve, 👋 some folks either don't get it or don't want to get it, there's a lot more to old forge than just snow. I get it, my sled is sitting out this season, as well as last, it's not only about snow. Unless that's what you want. I'll take all it brings to the table, instead.
#1 YES #2 It is a hard one,and time will tell.We all know its easy to spend someone else money. The time is coming where all the towns people are going to have to stand up and fight for change. This is where you don't make friends but at this point no one has much of a choose in the matter, it's time for change but i'm afraid it's going to turn into a big war. But that will tell a lot that needs to be told.
Tomorrow is Feb1st and there’s no riding to be had. I think it’s time to stop investing in the area and do 2 nice trips a year to northern New Hampshire or Maine. Fort Kent, I heard the riding is very good up there. I’ve slept 4 nights in my seasonal rental, the last 3 years it’s not making sense anymore, I keep on saying next year is the year and there opposite. Just when you think they can’t get any worse then it does. What the hell is going on
A negative attitude is not going to help solve the problem A sled is nice BUT we have a problem "houston" no snow, what's your idea? We need to land this problem.
It's very possible that only a handful of SxS and ATVs would show up every weekend, I believe more that you would expect. But isn't better for a motel , bar, restaurant, gas station , gift shops the list goes on , to have that handful come through the door than nothing? A lot of these establishments are hanging on by a thread, the margins and very tight.
Don't know until it gives'in a chance,it's being done in other places and is working out very well. People will come from miles around to have the freedom and the room to enjoy the outdoors as you well know with snow sleds.
I sold the sleds and replaced them with adventure motorcycles, by no means is it the same adrenaline as ripping a snowmobile down a groomed trail however you can ride them on tons of roads and trails through OF and it’s just as beautiful in the summer in the north country. Just saying.
It's never going to turn over to side by sides or ATVs. Might as well quit banging that drum. It's not going to happen, regardless of if it's right or wrong. It's a snowmobiling area and it's going to live and/or die that way. Like anything in life always hope for the best and have plans for the worst so you can ebb and flow with what comes matter. If a person doesn't know to do that then they don't really stand much of a chance regardless of how much snow comes or doesn't.
Now that's the Typical Attitude for O.F. you must live there and not own a business and if you do can't be much of one. Anyone with a brain can see the area needs help and it needs to change its way. I myself have been looking at the area and am looking at a couple places to make an investment But with the attitudes around town it makes me think twice. The town needs to make some big changes or more places are going to be going out of business. Wake up or that nice little town will be going to sleep.
Lets not beat another dead horse. Like the RR tracks coming up. Not gonna happen. Very few will do side by sides. Theres a ton of places to ride those already.
This is where you're missing the boat O.F. could be a much better place than the ton of other places. It's time to shift gears and start planning for the future.
Buddy my attitude is one of success. Old Forge has been here long before you were born and will be here long after you're gone. Because folk there know how to plan and not pull up stakes just because a season is rough or an aspect of the place isn't exactly to liking. If that's how you operate I'd bet you're not much of an 'investor' at all. Nor have you done any actual research if you're claiming all these places are going out of business. Don't say things just to say things for your own personal agenda. And save your snarky BS. I was speaking from fact not feeling.
By planning I mean being prepared for the ups and down. Socking funds away for dry times and running a smart business etc. folks in OF and the Adirondacks in general are resilient above all else. A few bad winters aren't going to be the end of days and OF isn't going anywhere. It's far from good or ideal conditions right now but such is life sometimes. It's nothing the area hasn't weathered before regardless of how frustrating and painful it is. Nobody is going to go out and buy atv's or side by sides because of it and that's never going to be the area's identity. People like their sleds and that's what they're going to stick with. If they do decide to get rid of them they're not going to go out and buy a four-wheeler instead. Not enough of them to justify trying to completely change a towns identity and cash cow anyway. Just because a handful of folks like it. That's not a solid plan, that's a personal preference/agenda trying to be sold by a small group of people who don't really know much beyond what they'd like and think. I'm not arguing for or against it. I'm simply saying it's not going to happen. And Old Forge will still stay standing in spite. I'd be willing to bet more snowmobileers still come when the winter is crappy like this than ATV and side-by-side riders come to ride in general. At the end of the day I'd like to see a happy medium for everyone be found. But it seems people are too busy railing for what they want and that's it.
I didn't say the area wasn't having a rough snowmobiling season. I said the folk in OF will power through it. Always have and always will. And the answer isn't going all doom and gloom and throwing the baby out with the bath water. That's the fact. Put some candles on it. ;)

ReplyDeletethis town needs to wake up and see the lights, it should have woke up 20 years ago
DeleteGreat video Steve hope it snows Joe
ReplyDeleteThis January thaw business really is definitely depressing
ReplyDeleteYou know what runs on limited to no snow don't you ? how much money is the town willing to loose ? these question do have an answer.

DeleteThey can coexist, just a little give and get, from both sides

ReplyDeleteEnough about side by sides. Only a handful of people would do that. Not me or most others. Nothing compares to a sled.

ReplyDeleteEveryone have a laugh stay positive and be kind to each other . The snow will come with or without the negativity.
ReplyDeleteShut it down. Save the whatever base we have. Pad lock the gates. It’s over! Pack it up! You guys are bunch of whiny little girls

ReplyDeleteIt may be there but if things don't change there won't be much going on. Even the summer trade has dropped.
DeletePlan? Not much planning going on.
ReplyDeleteNeed fresh blood in the planning department.
