1965 Don started messing with polaris sleds, Dick Rivett rented Evinrude sleds, Dick Barrett sold Skiroule, I think Bob Harwood had Ski Doo, Dick Bird in Raquette Lake sold something. Dunn's in Big Moose sold one and now it takes an arm and 2 legs to get a dealership.
First video of the year! Now I know that everything is getting back to normal for the upcoming season. A day without Steve's video report is a day without sunshine! So glad I was able to get back to Old Forge and stay at Christy's for a couple days in July. 71 and sun in Dallas today. Have a great winter, Steve, and let's hope the snow falls hard and provides an awesome riding season!
The Golden Era of snowmobiling I was just a kid during that time, and seeing the sleds Skidoo, Polaris, AMF Ski- Daddler, and "Skiroule" bombing around the streets during the snowstorms was what I believe got me into the sport, the dream of it all. But those days are gone . along with over 250 sled manufactures in the 70's , now were down to 4 . A new TNT back in the day cost about 850 dollars a trailer 175 a lot of money back then , but now 15k + per sled and 4k for a trailer almost triple the cost dollar for dollar in 2023. It's coming to a end hate to say it , but let's enjoy the time we have left and hope for snow !!!
For the heck of it what was your first sled?
Mine the 1972 Skiroule RTX 447 missing the seat and a cracked cowl but had factory twin pipes I might add, the cost $ 175 dollars used of course, I think I worked on it more that I rode it .. Be Safe Keep Right (518)
Steve, you had a boo boo at the beginning of the video. :-) Always love your videos to help me through the snowmobile season.
ReplyDeleteSee I'm out of practice!
DeleteSteve, Don's Polaris going to be open this season?
ReplyDeleteMy understanding is they will be open and doing general repairs. But they are no longer a Polaris dealer.
DeleteHave you heard if there will be a new dealer in town?
ReplyDeleteNot that I know of. Don's had someone lined up to take over. But the requirements Polaris has for them to take over was nuts and they walked away.
DeleteI can relate to that Corporate Greed, not like the 70's
DeleteStillwater being so low is going to be dangerous this year.
