LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 AM EST THURSDAY...
* WHAT...Heavy lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches in the most persistent snow bands. * WHERE...Northern Herkimer County.
Lake effect has been in the area most of the day and it's hard to say how much we have gotten with the way the wind is blowing. Cross your fingers the band moves north slowly and we see a good amount from it on Wednesday.
Today's Video..............
In the video I said that the warmup and R almost helped us and I said I would explain it. But I forgot to do it in the video. So here it is, we didn't need all the R we got. But it did help with building more base. By early Monday afternoon we started seeing snow and the parking lot was already freezing back down. We may have lost some snow, but in the long run I think we gained base.

LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM THIS EVENING TO 7 AM
EST THURSDAY... * WHAT...Heavy lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches in the most persistent snow bands. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph will lead to blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibility. * WHERE...Northern Herkimer County.
Just wanted to get in a quick post for those that are checking out what is going on in the north country. Cross your fingers that they miss the boat on the forecast for Sunday night. A little R could help with the base. But we don't need a replay of a the last R event.

After searching old posts, I found the date I was looking for. What date is that? The date I brought the original trail cam online. One thing I do remember about doing it, it was cold and snowing big time. On December 24, 2011 I posted "It was two years ago I brought you the trail cam for Christmas. Well this year I have something new for you again." What was it? I added a second camera on top of McCauley Mountain and it was a PTZ camera. Over the last few months, I've rolled out a few new webcam locations on oldforge.net and they high light the area in general. This Christmas I am rolling out four new camera locations all focused on snowmobiling. Go to oldforge.net/trail and you will see the links for them. They are going to be seasonal cameras only online in the winter. Hope you enjoy them and Merry Christmas to all and to all ride safe! Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas, Steve

The last two days we haven't seen anything more than a dusting of snow. But the temps are back down and things are freezing in from the R on Friday. The other quiet is the amount of people in town. There have been a few sleds running around. But with Christmas just a half a week away I'm guessing most are home getting ready for Santa.
Today's Video.............
We lost half a foot of snow overnight Thursday to Friday morning from the R and the wind. Lake effect moved into the area Friday evening. How long it's going to stick around is hard to say. I'm hoping long enough to get back the snow we lost. Temps are going to drop and things should start to freeze back down, turning into a solid base for the season.
Today's Video..............
Traffic has been light, which is to be expended with Christmas a week away. Groomers where out in full force today getting everything ready for the possible R Friday morning. So, the wait and see begins. Cross your fingers that the great beginning to the season doesn't get washed away. So what did I mess up in this video?
Today's Video..........
I'm sure I'll upset some by what I said in today's video. But it's no different than building a house. It's only as good as it's foundation and that's what we're doing. Building a foundation or as it's called in snowmobiling "Base". We'll have riding till Thursday morning. But by noon Thursday temps will be above freezing and may even hit 40, with some R overnight into Friday. Looks like a good weekend to stay home and get ready for Santa.
Today's Video..............
By what I saw and heard Snodeo was well attended this year. Sorry I don't have a time lapse video of the event like other years. I was instructed to turn off the camera I had inside of the building to do them. Vintage show also had a good showing of sleds. Funny what a little snow will do.
Today's Video..............
The kickoff weekend of the season is here and so are the sleds. There was a constant flow of trailers coming into town today. With that being said, the trails are going to take a beating this weekend and the snow we got today is a welcomed bonus.
Today's Video....
The winter storm warning is still in effect till 7am Thursday. It's sad to say but I'm getting to the point where I look at the lowest snow amount in the warning and figure on that as the total. And that's OK by me. Just think what conditions would be like if we got half a foot of wet snow every week. Just a heads up, I most likely won't be doing a post Thursday. Heading out of town for the day to go Christmas shopping.

WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 4 AM WEDNESDAY TO 7 AM EST
THURSDAY... * WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 7 and 12 inches with locally higher amounts 12 to 14 inches along the south facing slopes of the Adirondacks in Herkimer and Hamilton Counties. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph. * WHERE...Hamilton, Northern Fulton, and Northern Herkimer Counties.
Thanks for all the kind words and support on the webcams. There was more discussion about them at the August meeting and then a special meeting also. But in the end the town has decided they need to install their own cameras. I was asked to keep my cameras online till they have theirs up and running and I have. But it's been months now and I've needed some of my equipment for new locations that I'm doing. So that's the reason McCauley Mountain has been offline. But in the end, it really has worked out for the best. I've been able to bring some great new great locations for you to see.
Today's Video..............
WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING... * WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations between 7 and 11 inches possible. * WHERE...Hamilton, Northern Fulton, and Herkimer Counties.

For those that have been asking about the webcams and what is going on with them. Please go to 23:45 on the below youtube to get your answer. Also 43:25 at the end of the meeting.
It won't be long and the smell of 2 stroke will be in the air. We are a funny group of people. Thinking the smell of a sled is right up there with fresh baked chocolate chip cookies and apple pie.
