Did some research............

I wasn't shocked by how fast the snow settled down when the warm up hit us.  As the one to two feet of new snow we received over the last week or so hadn't ever been melted down.  But what did shock me was how fast the base softened up.  So I started checking on something and here is what I came up with.  It has been a very mild winter when it comes to night time lows and I think that is the reason why things softened up so fast.  There is no good frost in the ground and the base is getting hit from both sides by warmth.   The parking lot out back is melted down to the grass in one area and a guest pulling out this morning put ruts in the yard.....no frost.  I compared 2015 to this year, as we all know 2016 wasn't anything to talk about.

                      2015                          2017
                  Avg. Temp                 Avg. Temp
Jan                   8                                23
Feb                  6                                23

Jan and Feb of 2015 at least half of the night time lows dipped below zero and I'm talking 10 to 20 below.  This Jan. we had fours nights below zero, one being 16 below and the other three had an avg of 5 below.  Feb. so far we have had only one night and that went to 1 below....big deal.

  1. IM not a fan of climate change theorists but scientifically its been a bad time for many winter sports. On average temperatures in the last few years have been higher in the northeast. U could say the same for other parts of the country and globally however I have only studied and read about our lil pocket of the globe. There have been ABOIVE AVERAGE temps for the past few winters. However that doesn't mean its time to tan in the winter from here on out. ZITs just that rtecdently in the last five years or so the months of dec thru march have been above average by 5 to as much as 11 degrees higher in many parts of the right coast. SO You are correct steve. The data is there its just that people are to lazy to do the research. Tho I wouldn't gol packing things in for the next few winters because we have also seen many more dramatic storms as well its just been dependent on the J stream and pacific.
For more data plz read my columns @ Hurricane Schwartz NBC..

  3. It seems to me that if you're gonna be in our sport you need to be flexible enough in your life, family and career to be able to change your schedule and head north when the riding is good. Luckily for me I can do that as I'm self employed. I realize that many can't. My wife has been hounding me for years to get a seasonal rental and each year I prove her wrong. It seems that we loose 4 to 6 weeks of riding each season to periodic melt downs. For those that rode early last week you know what I mean. the conditions went from awesome to crap in 72 hours. The sport is fragile and so is the weather for sure. For me the season is over. I could never travel 5 hours and ride in these conditions...I'll take the memories of last week and hold onto that until next season !!!

    1. I rent seasonal with a few guys, It really is expensive and I sometimes forget how much it cost, but when its good, it does not matter. When its bad and you look at the checking account your like DAMN, for snowmobiling?

  5. Steve,
with all this warming trend happening is there any plans to cut a trail lets say, top of around or near 10 or 2 down to Uncas / Inlet trails, that way it takes that section of 5 near Eagle Bay and Big Moose road out of play that alway has marginal snow/ fair conditions in effect ?
    Thanks
