What can I say.....

Conditions aren't at their best after the big weekend, but the groomers are out fixing things up and there's no question that they are rideable.  You'll see in the video we got about 3 inches of snow over night, but we haven't seen any new snow during daylight hours.  This evening the temp has been dropping and there is light snow in the air at 6:30pm.

Today's Video.....

  2. Just got back from another weekend in Old Forge and I know it was not there idea to have the free weekend on a holiday weekend but what a joke. I have rented a house in Old Forge for the last 15 winters and this weekend was one of the worst I've ever spent up there with the family. The conditions were terrible and some of the crowd riding around were not what we are used to seeing around old forge. I will never subject my wife and kids to a weekend like that again and shame on old forge.

    2. By the looks of things, it was good for business. You made the choice to go that weekend. I purposely moved my weekend to this coming weekend as I assumed it would be crazy. Holiday, free, 1st major snow? come on man! We went to Caddy MI instead and had a great time

    3. My family has been riding in Old Forge since the early 70's. It was a lot nicer then. For the last 15-20 years we only ride Tuesday-Friday to avoid the weekend crowd.

  3. I agree with Paul L....it was a zoo. We tried riding Sat, Sun and Mon...each day we headed back to camp early. Need snow.

  5. Rode here Sunday and it was really beat up but that was expected even before we left home . What we didn't expect to find was the exact same conditions after 3" of snow Sunday night. After riding trails 7,8,3 and crossing over 1 in the morning and finding absolutely no sign of grooming at all Monday night, I think the groomer you showed was the exception not the rule. We decided to give up on Old Forge and took a chance on the Inlet end of the system. That end showed plenty of signs of grooming and the trails were excellant. Raquett Lake and the loops up by the Old Barn were some of the best trails we have encountered in the past few years. I just hope that the OF end got some work Monday night because had planned to stay two more days.

  8. @ Paul L. NOTHING is like it was 15 years ago! But you have to plan your trip. You don't know how the weather will be when booking a room 2-3 weeks ahead. But you have to figure: MLK weekend plus free loader mayhem , is a dangerous scenario for family riding. There has always been issues with the grooming schedule on weekends. Not much can be done about that. I learned long ago, come up during the week when taking the family. Don't give up! Wise up!

  9. No surprise as far as the crowd this past weekend. Anyone with half a brain knew exactly what to expect. And riding with young family or loved ones would have been tough to even attempt in my book. Even going out in town to eat vs. at home in at the house/camp/cottage would have been a stretch and difficult. Those who think ahead and plan tend to have better results than others....

    1. Tim,
Maybe I did not explain correctly on why I was up there. When I wrote I rent the house it is not just for a weekend it is for the entire winter We are up there just about every other weekend but on holiday weekends it's the only time we get to bring the kids due to school. I cannot bring the kids there and ride on Monday through Friday. I have been going to Oldforge for over 20 years so my half of a brain knows exactly what to expect. What I expect is to be able to ride if snow conditions warrant it after paying for permits on my six sleds and not have a thousand sleds there who didn't pay for permits on a holiday weekend when it's the only time most families can bring there kids in January. If not for those people the trails would of held up much better.

  10. I know, we all know. It was a horrible perfect storm that was known in advance. Contact the NYSSA about the holiday weekend free thing. It was a poor idea in the first place to have it semi-peak season and on a holiday weekend to boot. We all agree on that. I would think riding fields or whatnot or just relaxing off the sleds would have sufficed knowing the issues you'd be facing out on the trails. Too dangerous for me to even consider going out when it's like that...

    1. I agree on contacting the NYSSA and let them know what a poor idea that was. When my kids were school age, families notified the school about week long vacations to europe ect. So taking a few days off of school isn't going to kill ya! Also if this guy Paul comes up all winter, what the hell is he complaning about. It's not like this was his only weekend to ride. It's Old Forge, not Canada! Lol.

  11. OK So it was a free pass weekend for NY but How can that be for Old Forge trail system! Tell me if I am wrong? But O F doesn't send me a snowmobile voucher when registering my sleds.. I join another local club to get the voucher. I hope everybody was purchasing a temporary O F trail permit! When I started riding O F 5 yrs ago I considered it to be a more secluded area to ride if you wanted to pay the price!
