What month did you say it was?

Please note: I told you the wrong day for the vintage snowmobile races in Inlet. They are on Sunday, not Saturday as I said in the video.

It went down to 22 below this morning again and you would think it was January or February with the temps we've been seeing.  If the long range forecast comes true, we could be riding till the end of the month this year.  Make sure you check out today's video, it has a little of everything in it.

  1. DEC To Use Helicopters for Transporting Lime to Remote Adirondack Lake

Effort Will Counteract Effects of Acid Rain and Facilitate the Return of Brook Trout to Lyon Lake

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will begin to deliver 80 tons of lime to an acidified lake in the Five Ponds Wilderness Area north of Stillwater Reservoir in the town of Webb, Herkimer County today, DEC Regional Director Judy Drabicki announced.

State police helicopters and their crews will be among the 40 plus staff required to complete this liming operation. From a staging area at Stillwater Reservoir on the ice near the boat launch site, sling loads of 2,000 pounds of lime will be hauled by helicopter for 3.8 miles into Lyon Lake. The lime will be left on the lake and helicopter will return to Stillwater for the next load. This trip will be repeated 80 times over four days, weather cooperating, to get all the lime out to Lyon Lake where DEC staff spreads it across the lake's frozen surfaces.

"This is largest liming operation DEC ever embarked on, an effort involving months of planning and coordination with DEC staff, Forest Rangers and the critical state police helicopters and pilots and crews," Director Drabicki said. "Adding lime to the lake will allow brook trout to once again live in this waterbody. This is just the latest effort by Governor Cuomo and DEC to expand opportunities for the fishing and hunting community."

When the lake thaws in the spring, the lime will combine with lake water and make the water less acid. This will be the first lime treatment for Lyon Lake. DEC plans to stock the lake with native Adirondack brook trout during this fall's aerial stocking.

DEC has great hopes for reestablishment of brook trout in some larger Adirondack ponds and lakes. Fisheries staff has noted that the larger water bodies maintain a deep cold water layer right through the summer (referred to as stratification), unlike the smaller ponds which now mix right through the summer. This results in warmer water temperatures in these smaller ponds that are not as suitable for brook trout.

Anyone looking for additional information on DEC's liming program or a list of Adirondack trout ponds can call the Watertown fisheries office at 315-785-2263.

  3. That really does explain a lot. I am from the Adirondacks (live and work in Connecticut now) and I can remember as a boy (I am 52 now) how good the fishing was compared to today. The fishing is absolutely terrible now. We ice fished last week and not one person caught a fish. It is good to see that something is being done.

  8. Well then Steve, if there's so much more going on here that simple folks like us wouldn't understand, then please do tell. You know us folks, the ones that come to your town and pay to participate in the sport you promote. I'll bet I'm not far off with my comments.

    1. Hi George,

First I need to get something start in my mind. Am I to assume that you are the Anonymous poster from above that said "just not in a town run by weenies"? Because I don't see any comments in this post only a question and a statement.

    2. I'd also like to add, I didn't say he wouldn't understand what is going on, you did. I said I wasn't going to waste my time with a reply. Because I get sick and tired of posts like this persons. Shooting off their mouth, when as far as I know, have no facts about the event and what lead up to the jumpers not being here.

  9. No Steve, I am not "Anonymous". I posted under my nickname "Poo Rush", (polaris rush) a name my riding buddies coined a few years back. Then later, I responded to your post under George....

  12. Trails weren't anything to brag about on Wednesday when we rode there from tug hill. Once we got on the Brantingham trails the TOW section was crap. I can't believe the TOW is letting volunteers put them to shame. The only really excellent trail was trail 9. 29 was ok. Trail 8 was ok. Trail 89 was good. Trail 5 was ok for trail 5. Trail 2 was ok. Took the sheldrick run trail back towards Brantingham and the north end of trail 1 hadn't been groomed since the weekend. Wish I went a little farther down stillwater to that new trail. Trail 4 was the best I've seen it in 10 years though. Anyone shouldn't be surprised why less and less people are going to OF.

    2. Hi Brett,

You know I also have wondered why the big difference between the two trails in a short distance. I haven't ever been over in that area during the summer months. So I don't know what the trail is like on the Brantingham side, but I'm guessing that it may be a season road/trail type of thing. I think the cut off trail from Old Forge is just that a trail. Your guess is good as any ones, but you are right that the cut off trail to Brantingham isn't always that nice. The upper part of 1 is never nothing to talk about. It gets beat up hours after it has been groomed with as hilly as it is. Thanks for taking the time to post....Steve

  14. Only manage to get up 1 weekend per year since we moved south and we put on over 300 miles this year. Great riding and great service at places that were open. Hate to see all these places for sale and participants dwindling but with lack of good paying jobs and sky rocketing prices for sleds it is inevitable. For those who like to complain about Old Forge there is a simple solution - STAY HOME OR GO TO THE HILL BUT PLEASE JUST SHUT UPALREADY!!!
