Not as cold.................

Well we only got to 24 below this morning and it looks like it's going to be another cold one tonight.  But after tonight it look like it's going to be a little warmer.  With night time lows in the single numbers below zero and single and teens during the day time.  This weekend is The Adirondack Ice Bowl in Inlet and Nelson's Cottages has turned their webcam so you are able to see some of the hockey rings.

Today's Video for................

  1. I drove up from longisland tues night it was -15 at 7:00 pm. Rode to daikers for drinks and food, it was cold. Trails were hard, they seemed ok. Woke up to -31 below !!!! WOW! I went out to get coffee. The inside of my nose instantly froze. I did some work arouned the house and went out at 11:30. Warmed up to -5. All I have to say is that the trails were sick. Hard fast and no one arouned. Ripping the trails at sustained 60. Would never do that on the weekend. I went to Stillwater had lunch, then rode down to kovachs. Trails were groomed and fast. Heading back I jumped on trail 2-3-8. All were great. I finished up at slickers for dinner and drinks. If you can handle the cold get up here and ride. I am writing this back in LI wishing I cn ride tomorrow. Be back next week for more good riding. (week days).

    3. I would have to agree with you, that the area has changed from 20 years ago. 20 years ago you would get up in the morning and wondering how long it was going to take to plow. Because you plowed just about every morning, now you get up and wonder if you will even have to plow. Mother nature sure has changed her in 20 years.

    4. But to fair..keeping it real time in context ..A slight blink of a Mother Natures"eye" is not even 20 years ..so..what is (or not) happening is not even measurable as far as global weather (winters) history.

  7. the problem is mother nature she can be a pill... but if it was father nature it be a sure thing

  9. Hey Steve, My dad told me stories about riding down the narrows in the late 70's if these frigid temps continue is that even feasible (certainly not saying to do it or it would be safe) but just wondering.

  10. Rode tug hill this past week. I don't think I'll be coming to old forge anymore, maybe once a year instead of three times. I didn't hit one rock on the trail and no stupid rails. That's all I feel on the old forge trails. Big ass rocks.

  11. I don't get to ride the hill enough but I will agree there's a lot of rocks on the trails the old forge area. II do know that much of the hill is farmland and unmaintained roads so that is part of the reason you're not seeing as many rocky areas

  12. Hi Steve. I hope you can share this with the grooming staff. I am a local, and i love Old Forge. Old Forge needs to groom the trail that goes out to Brangtham, and OTHER exit trails. The trail out towards Brangtham is always terrible!! When u get to where there club takes over at the intersection it becomes beautiful. The low snow conditions is no excuse, other clubs are out grooming ,and doing what they can with the low snow conditions. Forge is grooming the loops so it all looks pritty on camra. . We pay for Forge to groom!! They are saving $$ by not grooming . this is not right. Yes sales and sled traffic is down do to poor snow. NO EXCUSE!!!. Like i said im local and know people. The Trail that goes out towards the brangtham intersection has not been beautiful since Bill Kerst was working for forge!! He groomed that trail and took pride in it!! GET OUT AND GROOM!! the low snow is not an excuse!!!,,Please,, and not just the loops behind forge!!! Thank u..

    1. Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to share your view on the trail going to Brantingham. Since you are a local and would have the time to pass on your thoughts. It would be best to contact the town supervisor or the trail foreman. Because I don't know if they read my blog and I am not in the pratice of passing on things like this to them. Because if I did, I'm sure they would get tired of seeing me real fast.

    2. I have called the town several times but in the long run you need more than one voice for change. I have been constructively complaining about the condition of trail 4 for years now and haven't seen even a slight effort to improve the grooming of this trail. The town fails to recognize that once the lakes freeze over trail 4 to lower Hollywood becomes a main artery for those heading up to points north. It doesn't bother me that a-lot of sleds use this trail, the trail is meant to be used, it does bother me that the town has ignored the amount of traffic that passes over it. I have decided to document the condition of the trail during this season and to do a sled count of how many machines go by the house during certain hours, maybe "quantifying" my complaint will help.

In the mean time i will be sure to second your suggestion on the brantingham trail but sometimes i wonder if the grooming plan is to keep everyone in the inners, people coming from other areas wont make a big dent in the business if all the people staying in the Forge are "boxed in".

    3. I can say with out a dought, after talking to ,many guests over the course of a winter. That even with the trail to Brantingham being at it's worst, won't keep people in the area. They will complain about it, but the new sleds help them get past it fast and on to other areas to enjoy a day of riding. The days of riding just in the Old Forge area are long gone and most people put on many miles in one day.

  13. Also you do have a good point about trail 4 and the lakes freezing. I never thought about the increased traffic once they freeze. Showing the increase in traffic may help in getting it groomed more.

  14. That's how I usually know the lakes are good!

  15. The people over 50 that have seen what used to be in old forge are spoiled, I am one of them. Ive seen the best and the worst. Can anyone even amagen what the groomers go through. We just don't have them winters anymore.Plus if people could just ride on what we have, instead of destroying the trails with the big track mountain sleds .Has anyone ever ridden behind one. I have ,a couple of hours the trails look like they never been groomed. Come on guys, just ride it, don't destroy it.Im 56 years old , I own a big machine , but theres a big differnts between riding on it and ripping it up.

    2. well said! and what they are doing to the roads now almost impossible to ride puts pressure on the trails.

    3. Everyone has their thoughts about the roads and we aren't going down this path. So please stop trying to slip in comments about them.

    4. wow look at the sleds at Stillwater! years ago there would be twice the sleds at the red dog at noon. give me a break !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

    5. And your point is? Give you a break? Give us a break. Posts like this one have no value at all.

      Delete
    6. I think his point is steve we can't go down this path anymore.

    7. Many times you can't go down that path. The same as I'm not plowing every morning, like I did in years past. Things change with time and this is one of them. Be happy for what you have and not what you don't have.
