Old Forge, NY Trail Report 3-5-12

As I predicted the conditions improved from yesterday, but the base did go down some from the warm up this weekend. There is no question that we are into spring time conditions and if you want to get another ride in you better do it soon. It's not the best out there, but everyone that I have in is having fun, except the guy with the blown up sled. Tonight it's well below zero and in two days they are calling for maybe 50.....what the heck!

That's enough or I'll start deleting posts or shut it down!

Here's Today's Video for........

  1. Hey Steve - There is no reason that you have to put up with this BS on your site. You have enough to do with trail cams, running your motel, etc. Do we or do we not have a tourism director that gets paid by the town? He must have his head in Casey's sand pile like the rest of the ostrich's that run this town. If you call the town to complain, all you get is an answering machine. The town should have a blog site like you have to take the heat off of you, but lately this town doesn't care. With the amount of complaints on your site, obviously something's really wrong. Next year if there is snow every place, this place will be a bigger ghost town than it was this year. Somebody better wake up in this town before it's too late. And I really feel sorry for the businesses that are working 60 - 100 hrs a week trying to make ends meet. And the first one that should go is Casey because he's nothing but rude & arrogant to everyone who asks a question about the roads. It's been a bad winter but when he's plowing an inch of snow off the road on the weekend, it's bad for the town and really bad for the taxpayers.

    1. is that the tourism director that thinks that this is place is the snowmobile capital of east he better look at boonville @ tug hill it's been over there for there for about the last 7 years.and the he's probably never had a sled.thats why this town hired him!

    2. Everything has changed. The town makes so much money from taxes on people who are there a few weeks. Sled fees, etc just is not as all important. Grooming costs. Seasonals who use nothing but roads cost little.

This attitute crushes the hard working businessman and is SHORT sited. It was NJ/downstate Sledheads who bought many of the camps/houses.

  2. Steve, I have an idea for you.....shut down the blog section of your website. I have never seen a bigger collection of crybabies in all my life. There is no need to give these people a forum to spew their venom about a wonderful town. In business I learned you can't make everyone happy and those you can't make happy poison the pot for everyone else.

    2. For the ones that think the town would b long gone without snowmobilers apparently you have never been up in OF in the summer try getting a hotel room in july after may not going to happen! This place is so busy it take a half hour to drive through town durning the week! Snowmobiling is a huge bonus for business but it doesn't make or brake them!!

  9. There are a lot of very nice people that I have met from New Jersey while in Old Forge. There is the other 5-10% that give them a bad name. Same with people from Long Island, same with the other New Yorkers, same with locals. These are the same people that are coming at you on the trail and go 80mph by you on the trail instead of slowing down to a reasonable speed and safely crossing each others path. I was in GiGi's for a late night cap last week and a bunch of locals come speeding and yahooing up to the bar all drunk and act like a bunch of retards inside the bar. Hell, Stillwater has been own and run by a Jersey girl(Marion) and her husband(Joe) for the past 26 years. There are more good than bad and it sucks the 5% can piss off the rest of world. You only get one chance to make a first impression.

  11. Hey Boys, come out to my new home country. Just like back in OF,don't read local weather reports, etc., just turn the key and go riding.

Tahoe News 3/5 6:36 pm: "Snowmobiler dies after triggering Sierra avalanche"
"A man riding a snowmobile has died after he triggered an avalanche in the Sierra Nevada mountians.
The Sierra Avalanche Center reports that the slide happended around 3:30 p.m. Friday after a late-season storm dumped more than 6 feet of snow in the area.

The Center says the wave of snow carried the victim downhill into trees and buried him. His companions found him dead, but were unable to pull him out.

Searchers recovered his body Saturday after Kirkwood Ski Patrol used explosives to clear the area of further avalanche danger.

The Alpine County coroner has not released the victim's name."

Tip guys: Don't bother bringing your short track 800 + sleds out here.

  14. Steve, Just wanted to say thanks to you, the clubs and Towns that are involded in your trail system. We came from Rochester several times this year and followed your instructions. We are very pleased for whatever the conditions were at the time. For us living in a "snow squall area" we were all at your mercy for riding. Thanks again for the great site and for the complainers, see who is man enough to write em and sign em! Jeff

  15. To the one that posted this
"My biggest beef this year regarding the groomer was the weekend of Feb 24/25/26. There was major snow and cold temps after the sleet had stopped and the trails were the worst I've seen them in the past 20+ years that I've been coming up there."
Three of us were up on the 25, 26 & 27 of Feb. We put on over 287 miles and with the exception of MRP from the Big T to the Ranger Station trails were GREAT.
I've been coming here since 1989 and will be back again next year.
Like it’s been post watch the weather reports, look at the cams and use good judgment.
A lot of bashers and cry baby’s on here lately and Steve is doing a great service to us by hosting this site.
Now if you had a bad experience don’t take it out on Steve or this site but call the Town Officials or before you leave town stop by their office and tell them in person.
Hate to think how you bashers would have been 20, 30 or more years ago before the trails improved and groomers were not as modern as they are today.
Some of you need to GROW UP.

    2. Sorry to hear you picked this past weekend to come to Old Forge with the way the weather was predicted to be, I too think you picked the wrong place. NH is a very pretty state and I am sure you will enjoy the riding there. But I wouldn't keep telling everyone how great it is. Soon you'll have everyone going there and then their trails will be getting the crap beat out of them.

    3. As a business owner in Old Forge I would bet all the money I didn't make this winter that the above is written by one of the small number of malcontents trying to stir up trouble here, and not by someone in town. All these generalizations of what people think or don't think aren't worth the ink they're not written with. If Steve leaves the blog up in view of the recent rants and I get time I will comment (my opinion) on some of the issues raised here as I mentioned a few weeks back when I posted.

  18. And next week spring temps & rain ..
    ....then the mud season..

  19. I dont think anybody has a problem with steve he does a great service. It is the town of weeb & thier groomers with no way to complain to them. Eighty dollars is not a lot of money but when its added to fuel oil hotel food misc. parts and no attempt to knock down 1-2 foot slammers really sucks. They can do a better job im sure

  20. Coming up on the last weekend of the year and expecting pristine conditions is retarded. We were up the week before and put on 1,012 miles in 4 1/2 days. All trails were in good/excellent condition. We counted 59 trailers on route 28 and route 12 heading north in one hour on our way back to Utica. Use your brains people.

  21. Steve;

Once again I would like to thank you for all the time and effort you put into this site. With the information you provide and watching the weather, I make a choice to come up or stay home. If for some reason the conditions turn out to be less then what was reported then so be it. I have been
coming up to the area for the past 15 years, and it that time there have been good and bad snow fall. But, I still come back and will continue to. because there is more to the area then just snowmobiling. If people would take the time to really get to know everything the town has to offer, then a bad snow day might not be all that bad.
I have owned my own business for almost 30 years now, and
I have found that the people who complain the most, are the ones who pay the slowest and/or complain or questions all bills. The people who you don't hear from are the one who pay right away and don't question the bills submitted. So I
guess thats the kind of stuff that make my work enjoyable, or just a big pain.
I know people travel long hours, I do the same, but I try to make the best of what the condition gives you. If I had
any issues I would not post it on the site and not sign it.
I would go right to the town and find out how I could talk with to understand what the problems are, and what they are planing to do.
People should just relax, and enjoy what is given to them.
Again Steve thanks for all you hard work, and enjoy your down time after the season.
    Steve M.

  23. I came to Old forge this past weekend knowing the weather and the potential for the trails to be pretty tore up by the massive amount of traffic. I even brought 2 guys along who were never there before and they said they would definatley return. If you think Old Forge was bad we made the mistake of venturing to Tug Hill on friday. It has not changed since the last time I was there 15 years ago. I was never so happy to hit the old forge trail system. It was night and day difference. I even got a laugh out of a sign that said"rough trail" I wanted to take it back to Tug as it was the best trail we were on all day. I think for the winter we had and the fact that almost all of the snowmobilers had limited places to ride the Old Forge grooming operators did a great job with what little material was handed to them. Maybe next year will be better, atleast I hope it is. But who knows thats what we get for loving a sport that depends on mother nature. Steve thanks for all your videos , and web cams I hope that you will do it again next year as I look foward to it like a drug. Take care and have a safe and Happy summer. From another Satisfied PA snowmobiler

  24. Steve, you do a great job and I check your webcam's and video's every day. I live in Rochester NY and there is no snow here.... I rode 4 times in old forge and trails are perfect. No more tug hill for me.. It's been a though year for all.. Ignore the complainers.. All my rides where based on your video's and weather conditions. Sad it's almost over.. See you in the summer. Doug
