Old Forge, NY Trail Report 3-4-12

It snowed most of the morning and we picked up about an inch of snow. Not allot, but it's enough to give the slide rails some lube. I saw the groomers heading out on the second shift around 4pm on the trail cam. With low traffic tonight and the predicted cold temps things should freeze back down from the warm up yesterday. I'd say the trail conditions should improve some after the groomers get out there and fix things up from the weekend and warm weather. If we get the warm up they are calling for mid week it won't do us any good. So if you had some thoughts of maybe getting another ride in, I'd do it soon. Because with the limited conditions we have, it won't take too much before it becomes ugly.

Here's Today's Video for.......

  1. Maybe Casey can get the roads in shape so the city people can get to the trails.

  6. never wasting the time or money to go to old forge on the weekend again . true it did warm up a little but turned cold sat after noon . the groomers could try and do something but did nothing . a lot of sleds come up there on weekends and pay the town $80 to groom . not just week days snow was good for grooming today bet it will be good mon and tues . let the locals pay for the grooming

  7. i would like to thank steve for your reports and efforts with the cams, i will miss following your site as I will never go back to OF again. I have ridden here 15 years,i also have pretty good knowledge of how the system works, with the season we all had this year there is no excuse for no grooming sat eve sun am,I also like LI drove 10 hours to ride sat sun and possibly mon...we waited sat nite for the groomers to roll,at midnite we gave up and hoped for sun am to have hope,again....not a groomer in sight...EVERYBODY I SPOKE TOO WAS COMPLETELY DISGUISTED...the trails were horrible, and i dont want to hear too wet,not cold eneough, traffic,is BS..someone explain to me why the groomers at the TOFWEBB barn didnt move when we needed them most, when you buy an $80 trail pass you expect results..not excuses, as i said 15 years, next year i will, along with the other 16 people in my group will ride in another area out of state with no plans of returning to OF, EVER. I spent Pres week in this area due to lack of snow in NY and it was very busy and all trails were groomed every night.thin,wet,busy,bumpy.....groomed every night...and riding was good.OF was so bad ill never go back

      Delete
    3. im not sure how many groomers they have running but all the trails are like glass ive been up there 3times this year but ive seen 4 diff groomers so idk they groom 24-7

    4. you also dont need insurance on your sled in nh its 114$ to register and your good for the season

  8. there was plenty of snow to work with and if the groomers were out they could have at the least knocked down the continiuos 1 to 2 foot slammers on every single trail, sat eve the temp was well below freezing and things were firming up and groomers would have absolutely been effective, who is in charge of the groomers, how about a real grooming report of what is groomed and when,,,not good to fair or fair to poor, whoever made the decision in OF to not groom any trails on this probable last weekend of the season, when all r trying to get in a last ride you sent alot of people home unhappy...maybe they only groom for the locals like the neighbors in lewis county...be careful or you may end up like tug hill..i actually noticed a local dealer shuttered in WL..keep grooming like you did this weekend and it will b the first of many, as for me i wont be buying sleds, parts, gear, gas ,food, lodging in OF again so the locals who depend on us for winter business may want some answers from the people in charge of the trail crew, the sign on the pole is a joke if you want to thank me do it by grooming the trails

  9. Steve, If you want to do us all a favor,as the rage and venom runs rampant on your blog for the conditions this weekend, give some answers.I am in total agreement the the trails were so bad that we cut our trip short by 2 days.We were parked at the rec center and no groomers left the garage at anytime Saturday PM or Sunday AM,its actually insulting.I recall about 5 years ago hearing about changes in who is in charge of what on North Street, maybe its time for another change.

  10. Old forge grooming crew sucks. Was gonna call in sick tomorrow and come ride but F U town of old forge. Keep our money and do nothing asswipes. Everybody in the future should go to northern new Hampshire or caribou Maine. At least they care about grooming and trying to make people happy to come back and tell their friends.old forge will be a ghost town one day. They should fire Casey. Thanks for the updates people.

  12. Steve;
Like everyone else, I like and enjoy your reports and video's.
But boy, there are alot of angry people on here now, how do
you stay so calm when you read all these angry messages. I would like to think that you are just a sounding board.
Is there a phone no. or web site that we can go to to voice
conserns over the lack of grooming, and direct this anger in the right place and not on this blog.
Thnaks for all you do, it's really great, and I will be back, because one bad season does not ruin the memories from past and future seasons.

  13. Hold on and quite bashing on here. This is not Steve’s job to find out why the groomers were not out. He provides his own time and expenses to have this site. If any of you are groomers operators maybe you can offer a reason for lack of grooming. As for not come back here well I’ve been coming for 24 years and yes they have not always been good trails. This is the nature of our sport. Back before the grooms you rode what it was and now no one forces you to ride here. For those of you that have said you won’t be back that makes more room for us that are loyal to OF. Go try Tug Hill on a weekend and see how their trails are groomed and how many were closed this season. You are a bunch of cry baby’s. Now go quite bashing this site and Steve.
Thanks Steve for what you have done and will do for the majority of us.

  14. well old sleder not everyone has your money and can waste it. I stopped coming this year to old forge just for that reason, paying for groomers that never happen. You already had 2 places close this year because of bad business, you want more keep talking. I read steves post just to keep up with friends, alot of people are discussed with Old forge permit prices as you don't get what you pay for.

  15. The guy in charge of trail is Pillman and he should have been gone years ago,has been around to long and could care less about the trails. As far as the roads they have to be kept safe for travel by car and its not the falt of Casey, he is only doing his job and a good one at that.

  16. I too was totally disgusted with the operation in Old Forge this past weekend. There is NO excuse whatsoever for not grooming on saturday night. I headed out early sun morning around 7AM and the only grooming that took place was the trail on North Street. I guess the town figured they got our money for the season so why bother grooming now as it is march and its going to melt next week anyway. Well, I have been going up to OF for the past 10 years and I'm done with it. Tug Hill is much better with the local clubs grooming their trail system. RIP OLD FORGE!!!!!!

  18. Steve,
A BIG thank you for all you do on this site. I enjoy
the updates you give for Old Forge along with others who enjoy it too. In our sport we are at the mercey of the weather, and old man winter just didnt do his magic this year. I love Old Forge and will be back. One bad winter is not going to make me stay away. For all the cry babys that
have their crying towels out and sobbing Suck it up or stay home. No need to bash Steve,he takes his time and expenses for this site and dont need the negativity from some people.
For those of us who appriciate what you do steve, THANK YOU!

I have put on 800 great miles this year while all U guys do is complain!! Great job Steve

  20. I put 1200 miles on in OF this year. Dont complain when you go up when its warm and r on a weekend and be surprised when trails are shot. I was up last Sunday and the trails were awesome, saw the groomers everywhere. It doesnt take too much common sense to know when to go up and when not to. FYI heard Tug Hill didnt groom either... Go figure.

  21. Just came back from a week in Pittsburg N.H. Groomers were out day and night. Trails are glass smooth,O.F. would not compare on their best day! Trailer north and you will be happy! Winter and life are way too short to waste your time in Old Forge!

    3. This blog is snowmobile info for the Old Forge area - NOT NH or ME! You are ignorant and rude to put this stuff on Steve's blog. Find another blog if you have to promote other places. How many times are you going to post on this stuff?! Steve is doing a terrific job for those who love the Old Forge area.

  22. I rode Friday and it was good. Saturday was mush. In all honesty, the groomers should have gotten out much earlier on Sunday. Someone dropped the ball big time Sunday. It was cold and the trails were very groomable all Sunday, but they did not get out till I had to go home. The few groomed trails I rode at the end of the day were great. Shoulda got those groomers out earlier.
Need to use some common sense.
    Sorry, just the truth.

  23. See... ignorant! If you had half a brain, you would see that Steve's blog cannot solve the town's problem. Nor can posting here change anything. If you WANT to change things, go to the authorities in charge. Do you think you're helping the people that live in Old Forge by promoting other state systems? I think not.

  24. i was up and put on 170 miles on friday - went to long lake and indian lake. There was some good and some bad we tried to take the road and we stopped and talked to some state troopers or DEC guys and they said one of the plow guys came up to them that morning and said i just salted that road up really good - there won't be any snow on it. I also met 2 snow plow guys 3 weeks ago. They said they have a reponsibility to keep the roads clean - if a car hits the edge and goes off the road they can get sued. DOT has put more pressure on them to do it.
we also cut our trip up there this weekend in 1/2 and went home Sat. Couldn't get anywhere. Inner trails were fun but you could only ride them for so long.
i feel sorry for the businesses up there - but summer is there key business time and winters are a bonus.

  25. THANK YOU STEVE!

For your reports and all that you do for the sport of snowmobiling and promoting the area!

I certainly appreciate all that you do, thanks again!

Your web cams are a big part of my day in the winter and summer, we always look before we come up.

  26. Thanks Steve for all you do to help us make the decision to trailer up from PA. Rode Old Forge 5 weekends this season and I have to say the only bad time was Saturday. But what are you going to do..Mother Nature will do her thing..been up there when they called for R and it snowed instead..I don't believe the groomers could have done much with the trails on Saturday they were so soft, We did ride to stillwater and alot of main and inner trails which of course were rough but we did it and had a good ride. When leaving on Sunday a.m. we did see the groomer out on trail 5, so I believe they maybe were trying to staighten things out as best they could. But anyway just wanted to thank you Steve, you do a fantastic job. :) SP

  27. And that is where you are wrong SB (does an O belong in there?). Granted the drag may not be much help in sloppy conditions, but the blade up front can take down the bumps, bring corners in, etc. I have seen too many where the groomers stay in with the justification there is nothing they can do. At times that is plain BS.

  28. I guess its time to say bye and have a good summer to all. This blog gave me alot of good laughs. I would love to personally buy shotgun Dan a drink at daikers next year as I am the one that started that. Dan Cheers, catch up with you in Dec hopefully. Dave from Long island

  29. Commenting and complaining on this site or in local bars will not solve the problem other than maybe making you feel better. Go to the new Town Supervisor (Ted Riehle --- his office in in the Vistor Information Center) and let him know your concerns and then maybe, with numerous complaints, he can take action. He can't fix anything unless he knows what the complaints are and just how many there really are! Punishing the local businesses by not coming back doesn't fix the problem.

  30. Rode pittsburgh 2 weeks ago,and it was the best riding i have ever did. Rode OF on sun and it was terrible. On the other hand OF has great bars to ride to and restaurants that will keep you gouing fron 10am 10pm with out getting board. Any where else is just riding and thats it. I compare old forge to the hamptons without the hotties. Well once in a while you get a hottie in a pink catsuit. Id rather see that then a bikini. have a good summer to all.

  33. steve i don't see where anyone blamed you for anything . we do app what you do .old forge is lucky you are doing what you do . If the town thinks that the sledders do very little to keep the town a float in winter time then don,t groom anymore and see what happens . if i had to go back to riding that shit , i wouldn't bother ill go south for winters . old rider shuv it. im 51 been riding a long time and put on 2500 this season . not in it for the bumps or the bar's
