Old Forge, NY Trail Report 2-22-12

This morning we woke up to 2" of new wet snow. I know big deal, but with the way this winter has gone, it is! At 3:30pm we have snow coming from the sky again. I would think that it's going to stay all snow into the night with it being this late in the day. But who knows for sure till it's all said and done. Things did get a little soft this afternoon as the sun was out for awhile, but we didn't really have much melting going on. Let's hope for a replay of last weekend, as that turned out to be a great weekend of riding. For any of you out there that has an interest in skiing. There is a big ski race at McCauley Mountain this weekend called the Kandahar.

Here's Today's Video for.......

  5. Not that some of you nay sayers want to beleive any good news, but here's how I saw it from a ride yeterday (Wed). Rode the inners and most other major trails (not 5) and popped up to Beaver River via Stillwater. Some trails were pretty good, some not so good. Trail 3 and the new cut over from 2 to Stillwater Rd are about 1 warm and/or sunny day from toast. Trail 2 was good on all of it. Some like 29 were good but bumpy and there didn't seem to be enough there (snow)to work with as far as grooming the bumps out. Rode the tracks from Old Forge to Big Moose Station and other than the last mile they were good, last part was bumpy and only slowed down a couple of times where tracks were exposed in open areas. Didn't try the tracks to BR as they are being reported as bad. What struck me was how fast things changed. There was fresh heavy snow from Tues night and it snowed in some areas during the day. Coming back to OF hit an area of wet snow or slushy rain, not sure which. Leaving town the parking lot at Subway (closed to April) was snow covered and unplowed. Coming back most of the snow had melted off during the day. Going out Stillwater Rd from trail 2 to the first point where you can jump on the reservoir the road was good and pretty much white. Just a few bad spots to pick your way through. Coming back the road pretty much turned brown, had slush puddles, bare areas, but still rideable. On the return rode the top of the snow banks a lot which you normally can't do this time of year. Considering the winter it was a good ride, glad I did it, will do it again today, and my carbides and slides are just fine. Weather forecast for the weekend seems to have improved, hope they got it right.

    1. Dream on buddy, over the last week there has been more rain there than snow with the lower elevation. At this time (11:46a)snow in Old Forge, radar shows mostly mixed or rain in tug.

  7. As good as the conditions are for what we have, 2 days of riding is by far enough, as for 440am said, 5 days is way to much for what we have. I have to agree with him. Whats up with the forecast. Undergrouned says 2 inches and rain. weather channel has a potential huge storm.
