Report and Interesting Reading.....

I was reading the New York State Snowmobile Magazine the other day and found some very interesting reading that opened my eyes to something that I had never thought about. First was about the Adirondack RR and the NYSSA/clubs that groom the tracks have to get permits to do so, that was on page 23. The story that really opened my eyes was on page 26, it was about us giving up our right to ride on the RR bed. I'm sure most of you, that have riden in the area before, have seen the petition asking to have the rails removed from the RR bed. Read this story and you may have second thoughts before you sign the petition. As the old saying goes...For every action there is a reaction.  Here is a link to the NYSSA Magazine online for you to read the article yourself.

  3. I drove up today. Little snow till white/otter in spots. old forge does have some, but bare under some trees. it was 35 around noon.

I actually saw a large group in new gear and nice outfits grinding by the Old Mill.

I went as far north as Daikers and that was it for sleds.

  5. Great article on the track beds Steve. Hope to see you in February after the Big dumps come. Can't justify the expense of coming back until the conditions are good. Looks like it's time for weekend paint projects around the house for a while...

  9. I would say dont come this weekend unless you can get your sled deep into the trails. BUT. its around freezing with rain starting. If it can dump tonight, the severe cold of the weekend combined with little sled traffic should hold it down.

  10. If you've ever looked closely at a map of Yosemite, you'll see that the wilderness area borders are configured so that the roads are not in the wilderness. I.e., there's wilderness on BOTH SIDES of the road, but the road is not IN the wilderness. It seems a similar tactic could be used for the Remsen-Lake Placid corridor.

And, have you ever experienced the tourist traffic that even the possibility of seeing a wolf can generate? Just visit Yellowstone in the winter! It would be great for tourism in the 'Dacks to have wolves resident. So, I think there is good reason for everyone to cooperate on a revised plan.

  11. You are right, there is a lot of information here! I would like to add some more to the mix. There is an immediate need for the snowmobilers to support the use of the Remsen-Lake Placid corridor for snowmobiling and consider joining www.thearta.org keeping the State’s priorities in order on the corridor. ARTA is working to answer the many questions about the Corridor and it’s preservation and its conversion to a recreational trail North of Old Forge. We encourage the business community in Old Forge to make a couple considerations: particularly when the trails are under marginal cover, if a patron calls for conditions, with the rails removed to Placid, it would be like having a highway without plowing for 90 miles! Flat, smooth, with no sharp corners quickly worn to dirt, you could say “ Well, some of the trails are OK, but you can do the corridor and get a couple hundred miles!” The Town has the beds, the restaurants, the services and the access. This Trail could be as big as Snowmobiling itself and provide the same level of services to the Bicycle crowd which is reported to be the fastest growing recreation in the country. (Google it!)
